Why Everyone Needs Own Open-Source AI & AI Agents?

Blog post by Anand: "Why Everyone Needs Own Open-Source AI & AI Agents?" (published September 13, 2026; categories: Tech). In the Agentic AI era, don't just rent a model — own it. Why your own open-source AI keeps data, cost, and control yours.

We need to agree: we are in the AI… sorry, that's old. We are in the Agentic AI Era. Everyone needs an AI & AI Agents to perform the task well, or otherwise those who use that will shine better than you. This is a current fact of the world. Since June, one thing has been nudging me in my mind. So, instead of 'polambifying'. I just like to share my thoughts about 'Why Everyone Needs own open-source AI & AI Agents?'.

So, a small disclaimer: this blog is about my point of view only, and it does not contain a solution for it. That's why? This blog is something more important than my usual blog.

So, without wasting time, let's dive.

Welcome to the Agentic AI Era

Just asking AI, copy-pasting, or following those answers is becoming old school. AI Agents are starting to venture into the internet. Just set it once, and AI Agents will do that 24/7.

So, this is an important period for the people who like to run the company, or do anything efficiently. These all are we most of us already know. But my point is slightly different. Yes, I agree; we need AI and AI Agents. But we need to own it, which means whether the AI or AI Agents need to be run on my own server or system to perform any task, and the model will need to be easily modifiable.

Why do we need this? What is the reason behind it?

They have plenty of reasons behind why we need this. Let's see some of them one by one.

What if the model became inaccessible?

Just imagine you are running a startup company; unexpectedly you make a profit, then you imagine, but basically your full system is end-to-end handled by AI Agents, and the AI model is not yours. You are just wrapped up with AI APIs.

Here, what if they deprecate or bring that particular model offline?

Yes, they have a fallback mechanism to handle it; they have MCP or another way to connect the model easily without hard-coding it for one model.

But what if the providers hike the price as not affordable?

What if their system goes down?

And there are a lot of what-if situations here.

2. How do you share your or your clients' data?

We are not able to say that the AI providers, even the providers who just serve an open-source model via their server, do this as a service. They are not saving or using our data to sell/train the model.

We are not able to trust them blindly and share the data with the models.

What if they use that?

What if they share that?

Here also same plenty of 'What if' options are available

3. Models are more intelligent than our needs:

Choosing the model is important. It depends upon the task they are going to perform; they will think and decide more and more. If you have more time, check dhanush bro blog; he writes about it in more detail: Choose Wisely: Models Should Follow Your Use Case. Back to our topic. We don't need the updated AGI-level AI Models to perform CRUD operations in the software. Ya, some of them even call that 'Agentic AI' are had in our software. For the marketing stunt.

Now many of them are thinking, 'Hey man, if the models are more intelligent, then it's a good news, right?' If you are thinking like that, sorry guys, that's not true. Due to the model capability, the computational cost became high; maybe the AI providers may absorb that cost and protect the users in the early time, but not for the lifetime, and just think about the amount of water they have spent cooling the servers to run this AI on their servers.

I mentioned a small problem with it. But they have plenty of others too. They are countless.

Merits and the reason behind my thoughts

Accessible and modifiable:

If we use the open source model, if needed and we have the capability or simply the resource, then we will fine-tune the model according to our needs, or we will slightly modify the model. There is no need of building RAG based system and wrap up the model with our AI names.

2. Our Model Our choice:

Has anyone thought of just checking grammar? Why do I need a model which have capacity to write the hollywood level movies? There is one video clip which actually viral. 'To just change a button color me using Claude Fable 5'.

Like that, why do we need a more capable model to do just a simple task? Because when we use the providers, they may give choices, but in the future they may deprecate or shut down the model, or even if the given choices are more capable than we need. Then we need to pay for it accordingly.

3. Cost is predictable:

The costs are unpredictable when we use the model from the providers. Yes, they already mentioned and they provide a pay-as-you-go model. But it's still an unpredictable one. It's good for a beginner-level startup or SaaS product. But for those who are running a million-dollar company, it must be a concern. When we use the open source model and run in our server. Then it's a fixed cost. No shocking charges.

4. Our data in our system:

From the era of old civilization, data is money. When we run the model on our own server or system and process it, then the data has not gone out. It is safe.

I may not be saying to use the open-source model to integrate into software and running in own server. Even for personal use. We must need a local Agentic AI assistant to code/develop the software. For that, we need the model to run locally on the system or on our own server.

Even to check grammar, to draft the mail, and for every small task using the local model, it's well preferrable. Because our data is important to us. Our data, our rights.

I hope many of them understand the reason behind my thoughts: 'Why everyone needs their own open-source AI & AI Agents?'

But is it possible? I hope yes.

In 2022, out of very simple model which is replying for the english questions turned into actionable AI Agents that do the task themself in 2026; it's happened, right?

Without knowing the potential of 'Attention is all you need', Google had just released that as a research paper, but from that phase to the phase, AI researchers had resigned to the fact that they have a 10% chance that AI will become a big threat for humans within a decade. It's happened, right?

Even in our own small phone, downloading Gemma and using a local model via Google Edge AI is possible, right?

Running AI models on servers and using them for our needs is already possible. I believe that, even now, it may be possible to run AI models locally and use them as coding assistants capable of performing tasks at an Agentic AI level.

Here's a small disclaimer: When I say "running the model locally," I know that this is already possible. What I mean is whether it will be possible to run a Claude fable-level model locally on a system with an i3 or i5 processor, without significant lag, while still being capable of performing Agentic AI-level tasks.

Will see. It may be possible in the future or already exist today at the time of releasing this blog. Because in this fast-moving AI world, nothing has become impossible.

So, these are the reasons why I am concerned about using open-source AI & AI models locally or on our server. I hope this blog give some insights to you.
